Meaning: an exclamation showing surprise

Usage: Yikes, I can’t believe that happened.

Dialog:
Susan – I got an ‘A’ on my history test. How did you do on it?
Tim – I got a ‘D’.
Susan – Yikes!
Tim – And I also caught a stomach bug.
Susan – Double Yikes!

    It’s fairly common around where I lived in the South of the USA and also it’s more common in writing with friends via email, or IM, than actually saying it. I use it a lot.
